Train-station Palma, Plaça España/Carrer d'Eusebi Estada
A highlight among the excursions for many Mallorca visitors is the trip on the nostalgic train from the island's capital Palma to the town of Soller, located on the north-west coast.
The route leads first through the plain in the north of Palma and then into the Tramuntana Mountains through the middle of a wild and romantic landscape. There is a particularly beautiful view from the top of the pass before the journey down into the Sóller valley.
Especially when the ripe and juicy oranges and lemons hang on thousands of citrus trees in February (Sóller and the surrounding area is the main growing area for oranges on the island of Mallorca) you shouldn't forget to have your camera to hand.
The train with departure time 10:40 h (in Palma, at the train station "Sóller" near Plaça España) makes a photo stop on the hill. But all other nostalgic wooden railways (from Siemens from 1923) also run at a leisurely pace and take about 1 hour to cover the total distance of 23.7 km.
The 10:40 train in particular is often very crowded, so you should be at the station at least half an hour before departure.
The town of Sóller is located a few kilometers from the coast and, like many other places on Mallorca, also has its harbour "Port de Sóller". There is a no less nostalgic tram with which you can comfortably travel the 4.5 km to the port (in partly open wooden wagons). Worth seeing in Soller are both the nostalgic train station and the facade of the Art Nouveau church by Gaudi student Joan Rubió i Bellver (who worked also with Gaudi in the Cathedrale La Seu in Palma). The church is located at Plaza Constitución 22, not far from the train station and also near the tram stop.
The official website of the Soller Railway Company offers you the most important information also in German. Here you can find information about the timetable and fares for the train and tram.
If you drive to Soller:
A trip to the award-winning "most beautiful village in Spain" is also recommended from Sóller. The village of Fornalutx (and also Biniaratx) lies with its picturesque alleys nestled in orange groves on a slope.
Follow the signs from Sóller. During the orange ripening season in winter (January / February / Beginning of March), a trip to Biniaratx and Fornalutx is actually a musts.
